Basalt Rebar is an alternative to steel and fiberglass for reinforcing concrete.
Classified until 1995, this newcomer to the world of concrete reinforcement is making waves among both pre-casters and pour-in-place contractors. Spun from molten rock, these fibers are stronger than steel and 89% lighter.
Basalt rebar provides many benefits and applications for the precast concrete professional:
- A 3mm basalt rod is equivalent to #3 or 3/8" steel rebar
- Cuts with standard cutting tools
- Increased flexural strength
- Basalt rebar is completely resistant to alkali in concrete and requires no special coatings

Continuous Basalt Fibre reinforced plastics (CBFP) is a new kind of composite which takes the basalt fiber as the reinforce material, combines the ethylene resin and filler curing agent and then be made by pultrusion. Its difference with the steel is that its density is only 1.9-2.1g/cm3. BFRP is a sort of rustless electrical insulator, which has the nonmagnetic, high acid-resistance, alkali-resistance. BFRP has the high permissibility for the moisture concentration of the cement mortar & the permeability, diffusion of the carbon dioxide. Theses can prevent the concrete construction from eroding to enhance its endurance.
